BIG CONCEPTS LEARNED AT THIS AGE

Cognitive Stage

(learning needs)

Sensorimotor stage: children explore their environment through the senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch)

Through these trial-and-error sensory experiences, they are learning about how their environment works.

SUPPORT THIS STAGE BY:
  • encourage children to notice the use of their senses often

    • smell the breakfast

    • feel the smooth rock

    • hear the rain falling

  • use descriptive language to talk to them about what they notice

    • ex: "That rock feels smooth."

  • choose cause and effect toys for your child to explore; they are learning "how to make things happen"

    • maracas

    • balls that bounce

    • squeeze toys

Psychosocial Stage

(psychological needs)

0-18 months

Trust vs. Mistrust: child looks toward caregiver for stability and  security

18 months - 3

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt: child seeks independence and control over physical skills

SUPPORT THIS STAGE BY:
  • provide consistent and predictable care so the child can develop a nature of trust and confidence

  • maintain routines and environmental stability

  • allow child opportunities to "do it themselves" even though it may be challenging

    • pouring drinks

    • dressing

    • choosing how to play
